Underwater Strobes.. should I buy one/some?

by on Oct.26, 2009, under Uncategorized

I am off to Raja Ampat in December for a 2 week live aboard dive trip. About two dive trips ago I bought a decent Canon point and shot camera with an underwater housing. The shots I have taken have been fair to middling, (mostly due to my skill but partially) due to lack of solid lighting. The video I have taken has all been fine, but most of that has been closer to the surface with more light around.. the snapshots have all had too much backscatter from the flash as well as a dearth of color that needed a LOT of post-processing.
From my reading, the basic solution (beyond being a better photographer) is to get a strobe in play so that I can get the lighting better without the backscatter and restoring the proper (or at least near proper) levels of color to the subject.
This of course means selecting a proper strobe based on the frequency that I dive/quality of strobe/price/upgradeability etc.
Not Simple.
Any ideas?
